A Year On Our Plot

Each year our allotment runs a competition to win a years free rent. Entrants keep a written or video diary showing what they grew and harvested, and how things went on their plot over the year. This is our video entry summarizing some of the changes to our plot between Ards Allotments open day 2017 and 2018. Some of the best improvements that we made were raising our strawberries out of the reach of the plentiful (and hungry!) slug population, and mulching around the fruit bushes to suppress weeds the help maintain even moisture. Even after an issue with the automatic watering system left plants without water for a month during a record breakingly hot summer, we had a bountiful harvest with no split fruits or tough skins.
